International Language and Education Innovation Competition 2024

(i-INNOLED 2024)

Mdm. Khor Gek Suan from the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation, along with one undergraduate student from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering were honored with the Gold Award. Additionally, she and two PhD students from the School of Education Studies at the Main Campus and the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Engineering Campus, received the Silver Award during the International Language and Education Innovation Competition 2024 (i-INNOLED 2024), organised by Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) on 15-16 October 2024, in the category of innovation sub-theme in teaching and learning (Competition mode: Online).

Mdm. Khor led a team, involving a member from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Engineering Campus, to propose their innovative concept titled “Enhancing Mandarin literacy skills among beginner non-native speakers using the Grouping-Arranging-Touch Up (GAT) Method and Word Sequence Diagram (WSD).” This approach aims to address the deficiencies in grammar and sentence structure familiarity for foreign learners, thereby facilitating their advancement in acquiring the Chinese language. This method necessitates that the language user classifies the words employed to construct a sentence into several categories, which are then organised according to the sequence of these categories.

Another team project was led by Lee Mui Foong, whose team introduced the "Greater Chinese" mobile application as a self-access learning tool to increase Chinese language acquisition for students enrolled in the Mandarin Language Courses LAC series. The mobile application "Greater Chinese" facilitates self-directed learning in the Chinese language, aiming to enhance students' attitudes, motivation, and desire in learning Chinese among participants of the Mandarin Language Courses LAC series. The "Greater Chinese" application is a contemporary Chinese language learning toolkit that offers several elements to augment the learning experience and facilitate a more joyful acquisition of the Chinese language. The "Greater Chinese" mobile application for self-directed study has accommodated students' VARK learning preferences. This application offers diverse tools for enhancing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Consequently, students have offered favourable feedback and conveyed their substantial happiness with the app's diverse features that strengthen their Chinese language proficiency. The project substantially influences students' attitudes, motivation, and enthusiasm in studying the Chinese language. The increasing demand for adaptable and easily accessible language learning tools, together with technology advancements, seems to be propelling a favourable future for mobile-assisted language learning applications in higher education as resources for language acquisition support.
